Renewable Energy
The Bedrock
of LandEscape

A PRACTICAL DEMONSTRATION OF A LONG HELD PASSION FOR SUSTAINABLE ENERGY SYSTEMS

A major motivation for the Deaton Family in bringing LandEscape Wanaka into being is to have a vehicle to incorporate, demonstrate and, ultimately, educate our visitors on the fundamentals and potential of renewable energy and energy efficiency in the built environment. This is an arena we have been involved in and passionate about for thirty years. In LandEscape Wanaka we finally have the opportunity, on a greenfield site, to put our deep knowledge of those concepts, technologies, systems and practices into real world use and to do so in the context of a “Regenerative Agriculture” based working farm.

For those interested in what has now generally become known as “sustainability” there will be much of value for you at LandEscape Wanaka. The following drawings and blogs give some initial insight into what is to come in this respect. You will see terms like “Combined Heat and Power Micro Grid”, “Temperature Stratified Thermal Energy Buffer Tank”, “Building Physics”, “Thermal Component Activation” and “Wood Gasification Boiler”. Eventually these concepts will be explained in depth on the website and demonstrated in a working setting on site.

Rik Deaton first developed an interest in renewable energy systems at university in the 1970’s. This early interest blossomed into a fully blown passion for both Rik and Juliet in the mid 90’s as we toured Europe by motorhome for three years with two mountain bikes on board, along with a 535cc motorcycle and a two-place “Klepper” folding ocean kayak - now that’s motorhome travel!!! We structured that trip around renewable energy trade shows and demonstration centres (notably The Centre for Alternative Technology in Wales and The Nordic Folk Centre in Denmark - visit both if you ever have the opportunity) and our knowledge of the concepts and systems began to grow.

Since then Rik has attended literally dozens of European building, forestry, biomass, solar and window trade shows along with many symposiums, seminars and conventions such as World Sustainable Energy Days and the week long International Passive Haus convention in Vienna. Such shows are simply a cornucopia of information for the interested and Rik, a self-confessed “trade show junkie” walks the aisles for days at a time.
